Kalpana Chawla
(Hindi: कल्पना चावला) (Punjabi:ਕਲਪਨਾ ਚਾਵਲਾ)
(7 March, 1962 – 1 February, 2003)
Kalpana Chawla was an Indian-American astronaut and space shuttle mission specialist.
She was one of seven crewmembers lost in the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster.
Early Life
Kalpana Chawla was born into a Hindu family in Karnal, Haryana, India.Kalpana in Sanskrit means "imagination of the mind" and thus also "creation." Her interest in flying was inspired by J. R. D. Tata, a pioneering Indian pilot and industrialist. She met her husband, Jean-Pierre Harrison, a flying instructor and aviation writer, at the University of Texas-Arlington where she pursued her Master of Science degree in aerospace engineering.
A file photo shows Kalpana Chawla, sitting center with long hair, next to her classmates at Tagore Baal Niketan School, in Karnal, 130 kilometers from New Delhi, India. Chawala was a former student of the school, which sponsors two girls to visit NASA each year.
Personal Characteristics
Chawla was a vegan. On her mission, she carried a white silk banner as part of a world- wide campaign to honor teachers, as well as nearly two dozen CDs, including ones by Abida Parveen, Yehudi Menuhin, Ravi Shankar, and Deep Purple. She went to her first rock concert, a Deep Purple show, in 2001 with her husband. "Kalpana is not necessarily a rock music aficionado," her husband said of a Deep Purple show, "...but (she) nevertheless characterized the show as a 'spiritual experience.'" She enjoyed birdwatching, backpacking, hiking, flying, and reading. Quoting philosopher Lucius Annaeus Seneca she always said, "I was not born for one corner; the whole world is my native land

| Memoria Asteroid 51826 Kalpanachawla, one of seven citations named after the Columbia's crew On February 5, 2003, India's Prime Minister announced that the meteorological series of satellites, "METSAT", will be renamed as "KALPANA". The first satellite of the series, "METSAT-1", launched by India on September 12, 2002 will be now known as "KALPANA-1". "KALPANA-2" was also expected to be launched by 2007. 74th Street in Jackson Heights, Queens, New York City has been renamed 74th Street Kalpana Chawla Way in her honor. The University of Texas at Arlington (where Chawla obtained a Master of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering in 1984) opened a dormitory named in her honor, Kalpana Chawla Hall, in 2004. Kalpana Chawla Award award was instituted by the government of Karnataka in 2004 for young women scientists The girls hostel at Punjab Engineering College, is named after Kalpana Chawla. In addition, an award of INR twenty five thousand, a medal, and a certificate is instituted for the best student in Aeronautical engineering department. NASA has dedicated a super computer to Kalpana. One of Florida Institute of Technology's student apartment complexes, Columbia Village Suites, has halls named after each of the astronauts, including Chawla. NASA Mars Exploration Rover mission has named seven peaks in a chain of hills, named the Columbia Hills, after each of the seven astronauts lost in the Columbia shuttle disaster, including Chawla hill after Kalpana Chawla. Steve Morse from the band Deep Purple created a song called "Contact Lost" in memory of the Columbia tragedy along with her interest in the band. The song can be found on the album, "Bananas". Kalpana Chawla has inspired several young Indians aspiring to be astronauts. Her brother, Sanjay Chawla, remarked : "To me, my sister is not dead. She is immortal. Isn't that what a star is? She is a permanent star in the sky.. She will always be up there where she belongs." Columbia breaking up in the blue skies over Texas. An image that will never be forgotten by those who witnessed it. | |

| Lasting more than 15 days, the mission was going well... Upon reaching orbit, the crew performed the usual tasks associated with setting up a Space Shuttle Orbiterfor extended orbital operations. After MECO (Main-Engine Cut Off), one member of the crew pulled out a videocamera, floated over to a window, and videotaped the External Tank as it fell away. (This footage was, apparently, never downlinked.)See an on-board view of A Space Shuttle launch sequenceRick And Willie performed the OMS burns to boost Columbia to a high enough orbit andcircularize it. They opened the payload bay doors to dissipate heat, and adjusted Columbia's attitude for optimalthermal performance. They floated up out of their seats, removed the Specialists' seats from their mounts (the twopilots' seats don't come out) and stowed them, and doffed their pressure suits in favor of more casual, comfortableattire. Then, it was down to business. As usual, the crew provided audio, video, and telemetry downlinks, as wellas downlinked still imagery of their daily activities over the course of the mission.Day 2:Rick Husband poses for a picture at the Aft Crew Station up on the Flight Deck, where the Payload BayDoors and RMS arm (when carried; it wasn't this time) are operated. On Shuttle missions, the crew is divided intoBlue and Red Teams to work in shifts, and the flight controllers in Houston wake them to begin their shifts bybroadcasting musical greetings to the orbiting crew. The Red Team shift on the second day of STS-107 beganwith "[url=https://nilandnilu.forumotion.com/]America the Beautiful", performed by the Texas Elementary Honors Choir-featuring Rick's daughter, Laura. NASA Photo.
Day 3:
Kalpana Chawla is seen in the SPACEHAB double-module through the tunnel linking it to the crew cabin.
Since Kalpana was a Deep Purple fan, Red Team began their shift on Day 3 with Mission Control
playing the 'Purple classic, "Space Truckin" as a wakeup tune.
Day 10:
The crew shares this awesome photograph on their downlink, a quarter-moon over the airglow of the Earth.
On Day 10, Blue Team woke to a rendition of the Eagles' " Hotel California"- performed by
members of Willie McCool's family.
Day 13:
The crew gives the team back at Houston a view of Houston as Columbia passes overhead that night
The Blue Team wakeup from Day 15:
"Imagine" by John Lennon. Willie McCool and Ilan Ramon replied that they hoped one day that those on Earth
could see a borderless world, as they saw it from Columbia that day. It had been a spectacularly successful
mission (Video). The scientific experiments had all yeilded useful data that the teams on the ground were looking
foreward to investigating, and thus far, old, histroic Columbia had performed, as John Young, her first commander,
had noted 22 years earlier, "like a champ."
The day before a Shuttle re-entry and landing is usually spent squaring the Orbiter and payload away for the task
ahead-closing things down, securing experiments, gathering up and stowing or disposing of loose items.
Housekeeping things. For the busy 16th day of the mission, Mission Control served up "Silver Inches" by Enya
for Blue Team, and later, Red Team recieved "Shalom lach eretz nehederet" by Yehoram Gaon.
[url=http://in.groups.yahoo.com/group/H_e_a_r_t_B_e_a_t_s/join] They're going to get this all out of the way today. Tomorrow, they come home. Although the mission was only going to last about 16 "complete" days, the crew actually operated through 17 complete work days. So February 1, 2003, landing day, was Day 17 for them. The last wakeup tune they heard in orbit was Red Team's greeting of "Scotland the Brave," by the storied "Black Watch" and the Band of the 51st Highland Brigade. The Shuttle Flight Control Room at JSC Mission Control Center, February 1, 2003: At this moment, justas Columbia is streaking over the desert Southwest (as shown on the ground track on the screen on the right) , and entering its period of maximum heating during descent (the Orbiter is passing through Mach 18, over 12,000 MPH, well over 200,000 ft), the crew and Mission Control note rising temperatures and pressures-and then sudden losses-in the Orbiter's left hydraulic systems, landing gear systems, and other anomalies. Then, ominously, as Rick Husband responds to a call from the CapCom, he is seemingly cut off in mid-sentence-and all contact with Columbia, both voice and telemetry, is suddenly lost.
